CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Assembly Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday described the reported power tussle between ruling allies BJP and Tipra Motha as a “manufactured” drama aimed at diverting public attention from deprivation and alleged corruption in the state.

Addressing a party rally at Belonia in South Tripura district, Chaudhury alleged that the benefits of governance had failed to reach common people, while a small section had accumulated disproportionate wealth over the past seven years. According to him, the sudden enrichment of a few individuals was clearly visible in both rural and urban areas.

He claimed that in almost every panchayat and locality, a handful of people had witnessed dramatic changes in their financial status within a short period. Referring to what he termed visible symbols of this enrichment, the CPI(M) leader alleged that high-end vehicles had become common among ruling party functionaries and that vehicles carrying party flags often escaped routine checks.

Chaudhury also alleged irregularities in the utilisation of flood relief funds provided by the Centre and the state, claiming that resources meant for affected families were misused by a section of ruling party supporters, an allegation denied by the government.

On the BJP–Tipra Motha differences, he said the public display of discord was misleading and asserted that despite verbal sparring, the alliance would remain intact due to political compulsions. He reiterated the CPI(M)’s demand for accountability, transparency and unity against what he described as misrule and corruption.
