Tension prevailed once again in politically sensitive Kailashahar on Monday after a local contractor was seriously injured in a clash near the Irani Primary Health Centre under the jurisdiction of the Irani police station, officials said.
The injured has been identified as Mizanur Rahman Sagar, a contractor reportedly involved in government works. According to his statement, he was present at his worksite near the PHC when a group of unidentified miscreants allegedly launched a sudden and unprovoked attack on him. He claimed that the assailants struck him on the head, causing him to collapse on the spot in a blood-soaked condition.
Hospital sources said Sagar sustained serious head injuries and required eight stitches. After receiving initial treatment, he was shifted to Unakoti District Hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable and under close medical observation.
The incident triggered panic in the surrounding area, with local residents expressing concern over the recurring incidents of violence in the region, which has witnessed frequent clashes in recent months over government contracts.
Sagar also alleged that the attack took place close to the Irani police station. Police officials said personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information, rescued the injured contractor and arranged for his immediate transfer to hospital.
Following the incident, the administration deployed additional police and paramilitary forces at key and sensitive points in Kailashahar to prevent any escalation, officials said. The police have initiated an investigation and are making efforts to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack, they added.
