CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has strongly condemned Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma for his controversial and aggressive remarks against TIPRA Motha, stating that such language is unacceptable from a constitutional authority and poses a serious threat to democratic values.

The sharp reaction from the CPI(M) leader came in response to a statement made by Minister Bikash Debbarma on Saturday during a BJP Janajati Morcha mega joining programme held near Rabindra Bhavan in the state capital. While addressing the gathering, the minister launched a fierce attack on TIPRA Motha—an ally of the BJP-led government

and went to the extent of saying that TIPRA Motha should be torn apart like a poultry rooster. The remark immediately triggered political outrage.

Speaking on Monday, Jitendra Chaudhury said the language used by the minister while referring to TIPRA Motha was neither befitting of a minister nor of a civilised individual. He asserted that even if TIPRA Motha, which has been spearheading the demand for Tipraland, is accused of any undemocratic or unlawful activities, the appropriate course of action would be to seek legal remedies within the framework of the Constitution.

The government has institutions, laws and constitutional mechanisms. If any organisation violates the law, action can be taken accordingly. But issuing open threats and using violent, provocative language from a public platform is dangerous and completely unacceptable, Chaudhury said.

Politically, CPI(M) and TIPRA Motha remain on opposite poles and are adversaries in the political arena. Despite this rivalry, Chaudhury’s statement has been viewed as a strong defence of democratic norms, indirectly lending support to TIPRA Motha by condemning the BJP minister’s remarks. Political observers believe the CPI(M) leader’s intervention has given oxygen to TIPRA Motha at a time when tensions within the ruling alliance have surfaced publicly.

The Leader of the Opposition further pointed out that such statements reflect internal contradictions and intolerance within the ruling dispensation. He demanded that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha take serious note of the incident and clarify the government’s stand on the issue.

Chaudhury warned that inflammatory and violent rhetoric by ministers could vitiate the political atmosphere of the state and damage social harmony, particularly in sensitive tribal–non-tribal relations. He stressed that Tripura has a long tradition of peaceful democratic discourse and that reckless statements from those in power undermine that legacy.

The incident has added a new dimension to Tripura’s political landscape, highlighting growing strains within the BJP-led coalition and raising questions about the government’s commitment to democratic conduct and responsible governance.
