A serious political controversy has emerged in Tripura following allegations by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the CPI(M) that their organisational conference was disrupted by ruling party supporters in Kailashahar on Sunday.

According to DYFI leaders, a zonal conference of the organisation was being held peacefully since morning at Chandipur under Kailashahar subdivision when alleged BJP supporters arrived at the venue carrying lathis, sticks, hand bombs and sound devices, forcing the programme to be abandoned. The incident has triggered sharp criticism of the BJP–Tipra Motha–IPFT coalition government led by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, with the opposition accusing the government of failing to uphold democratic rights and the rule of law.

CPI(M)-affiliated youth leaders on the ground alleged that the BJP selectively targets politically weaker opponents. They claimed that while the BJP does not dare to disrupt programmes of stronger political forces, it attempts to intimidate and attack organisations where resistance is perceived to be limited. Referring to the political situation in Kailashahar, CPI(M) youth leaders alleged that the BJP avoids confronting the Congress and Tipra Motha directly, but instead targets Left-backed youth organisations like DYFI.

The youth leaders further argued that merely holding press conferences is not enough to counter such actions, and stressed the need to strengthen grassroots opposition organisations. According to them, empowering youth workers and expanding organisational strength on the ground is the only way to curb what they described as political intimidation.

The CPI(M) also accused Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha of hypocrisy, pointing out that he has repeatedly stated that every political party has the democratic right to organise meetings and rallies. However, the party alleged that members of the ruling alliance themselves are violating these principles. “There is a clear gap between words and actions,” CPI(M) leaders claimed, alleging that assurances made in speeches are not reflected in reality.

At the same time, a contrasting view was expressed by Tipra Motha supporters, who stated that their party has consistently allowed CPI(M) to hold meetings and rallies in areas under its influence. They alleged that during earlier BJP and IPFT regimes, CPI(M) programmes were often not permitted, and cautioned against equating Tipra Motha with the BJP or IPFT on this issue.

The incident has once again brought the issue of political tolerance, democratic space and law and order in Tripura into sharp focus. As allegations and counter-allegations continue, opposition parties have demanded accountability and assurances that all political organisations will be allowed to function freely without fear or intimidation.
