Tripura’s political atmosphere has heated up ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, with sharp exchanges between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Tipra Motha leadership over alleged political infiltration.

The Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr Manik Saha, day before yesterday made strong allegations, claiming that a majority of those associated with the Tipraland demand-based party Tipra Motha were originally from the CPI(M). He alleged that these elements were responsible for creating disturbances at different places across the state, adding a fresh dimension to the growing political confrontation in the tribal belt ahead of the ADC polls.

Responding strongly, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman today countered the Chief Minister’s remarks during a Facebook Live interaction while travelling from Delhi to Bengaluru. He alleged that a large number of CPI(M) agents were operating from within the BJP itself and that these CPI(M) supporters inside the ruling party were creating trouble across the state. Pradyot Kishore Debbarman further asserted that political infiltration and opportunism were not confined to any single party, indicating a deeper and more complex realignment in Tripura’s tribal politics.

The Tipra Motha supremo also claimed that his party was the only political force with a strong and genuine support base across the TTAADC areas. He alleged that no other political party had any real organisational base in the ADC region and expressed confidence that Tipra Motha would win all the seats in the upcoming ADC elections.

Earlier, addressing a BJP-organised joining programme in front of the Rabindra Bhavan, the Chief Minister defended his party’s growing support, particularly among tribal communities. He said those who recently joined the BJP had taken the right decision at the right time, asserting that the BJP was the only party that truly understood how to provide dignity and respect to indigenous people.

Dr Saha criticised the emergence of new local tribal parties every five years, stating that despite repeated political experiments, there had been no lasting or meaningful development for tribal communities. According to him, such political formations had failed to deliver tangible progress on the ground.

Expressing confidence about the BJP’s prospects in the TTAADC elections, the Chief Minister said his party would definitely come to power in the council and win all 28 seats in the 28-member body. He also committed to ensuring comprehensive development in the TTAADC areas under the guidance and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Emphasising grassroots support, he claimed that tribal brothers and sisters had pledged to secure all 28 seats and form the next ADC government.

The exchange of allegations between the ruling BJP and the Tipra Motha leadership reflects an intensifying political rivalry in Tripura’s tribal areas, where development, identity, and political allegiance have emerged as key issues in the run-up to the crucial ADC elections.
