Tripura Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Saturday alleged that the growing drug menace in the state was flourishing under the patronage of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and was being used as a political tool to destroy the future of the youth.
Addressing the state conference of the All India Democratic Women Association here, Chaudhury claimed that the BJP knew it could not retain power through free and fair elections and was therefore encouraging anti-social elements involved in narcotics trafficking to spread fear and social decay. He alleged that drug networks were operating openly with political backing.
The CPI(M) leader further claimed that most arrests made under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act had links to the ruling party. He alleged that nine out of ten accused in NDPS cases were seen associating with senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Manik Saha and other ministers, describing them as protected political assets.
Chaudhury also questioned the credibility of recent election outcomes, claiming they did not reflect the people’s true mandate. He alleged large-scale accumulation of wealth by a small section over the past seven-and-a-half years and accused the government of shielding criminals, asserting that public anger against the BJP was steadily mounting.
