A major drug trafficking racket was uncovered late Thursday night at the Ambassa Police Naka Point, exposing yet another alarming attempt to smuggle narcotics through Tripura. Police intercepted a vehicle travelling from Kanchanpur toward Agartala and, upon thorough inspection, recovered 137 packets of heroin weighing 1 kg 644 grams, along with approximately 10,000 Yaba tablets.
According to police estimates, the seized heroin and Yaba tablets carry a combined market value of nearly Rs. 2.5 crore, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the smuggling operation. Three individuals, including the vehicle driver, were arrested on the spot.
However, serious questions have once again surfaced regarding the identification of the real masterminds behind these recurring drug hauls. Despite the massive quantity of narcotics recovered, police officials maintained silence about the actual kingpin behind the operation. Even those arrested reportedly claimed to have no knowledge of the true owner of the contraband, an increasingly common pattern in such cases.
Concerns are also rising over the lack of effective monitoring of drug movement through railway routes, as narcotics continue to enter Tripura through multiple channels without significant resistance at enforcement or political levels.
This comes at a time when Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has repeatedly emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against drug smuggling. Yet, frequent seizures coupled with the inability to track down the core network raise doubts about the implementation of this directive on the ground.
The incident underscores the urgent need for deeper investigations, coordinated intelligence operations, and accountability within enforcement agencies to dismantle the entrenched drug trafficking networks operating in the state.
