In a major political development in Tripura, CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury has filed a defamation case against former Chief Minister and sitting MP Biplab Kumar Deb, accusing him of making false, baseless and defamatory remarks linking the party to the theft of gold ornaments from the donation box of Udaipur Maa Tripureshwari Temple.
The controversy began after Deb, while attending a religious programme at Gandhigram, alleged that CPI(M) workers had stolen gold ornaments from the sacred donation box of the revered Matabari temple. His comments created widespread uproar, with CPI(M) demanding either proof or a public apology.
According to CPI(M), despite issuing multiple statements, notices, and legal communications seeking clarification and demanding an apology, Deb did not respond. As a result, on Thursday, Jitendra Choudhury personally approached the court and filed a formal defamation complaint.
Speaking to the media after submitting the case, Choudhury said that the party had followed every democratic and legal process before taking the matter to court.
“We immediately issued a statement seeking an explanation. He was asked to apologise. He didn’t. We sent a lawyer’s notice and followed all required procedures. He chose not to respond. We were left with no other option but to approach the court under the prevailing laws of our country,” Choudhury stated.
He added that Deb’s remarks caused immense pain to lakhs of CPI(M) supporters and were intended to malign the party’s public image through false, imaginary and defamatory accusations.
