A rare and heart-touching incident in Agartala has set a shining example of honesty and moral integrity, led by members of the transgender community. The event took place at the Arundhutinagar-based Dutta Residence during the wedding ceremony of Nayan Dutta’s only daughter on 26 November.
The wedding house was filled with lights, music, and the festive sound of shehnai when a group of transgenders arrived, as is customary during celebrations. They met Bijan Dutta, the younger brother of Nayan Dutta, who works under Tripura Government’s National Health Mission and was managing the wedding arrangements. The group initially demanded Rs. 10,000 as part of their traditional blessing ritual.
Bijan Dutta, already under severe financial pressure due to heavy wedding expenses and the medical treatment costs of his ailing elder brother Suban Dutta who is a employee of Dainik Sambad, pleaded for a reduction. After discussion, the group agreed to accept Rs. 7,000. Bijan sent the amount through Google Pay, and the group left happily. The wedding concluded peacefully.
However, the real story of honesty unfolded the next day. Around noon, three members of the transgender community returned to the Dutta household. Bijan was not home, he had taken his elder brother for dialysis at ILS Hospital. His wife feared they might be back to demand more money, so she asked the family’s caretaker to speak with them. Upon learning Bijan was at the hospital, they spoke to him over the phone and simply requested a sari, nothing more.
The following day, they returned once again and met Bijan in person. This time, they shocked him with a simple question: How much money did you send us?
Confused, Bijan replied, Whatever we agreed upon, I paid. They urged him to check his phone pay account.
When Bijan opened his Google Pay transaction history, he was stunned. Instead of Rs. 7,000, he had mistakenly sent Rs. 70,000. His frustration and shock were evident until the group clarified why they had come. They had returned solely to give back the Rs. 63000 extra money.
They told Bijans wife:
If we return this money, what gift will you give us?”
His wife responded that she would happily give them Rs. 2,000. After some light-hearted negotiation, they took an additional Rs. 8,000 and immediately transferred Rs. 55,000 back into Bijan Dutta’s account.
Expressing deep appreciation for their honesty, Bijan said: Had they not returned, I would never have known I sent Rs. 70,000 instead of Rs. 7,000. This extraordinary act by the transgender community has become an inspiring example for society. Honesty still shines in unexpected places and this incident stands as a reminder that integrity transcends identity.
