In a significant incident exposing the growing schism within the interim government two pro-Islamist advisors have tendered their resignations to the chief advisor Md Yunus . The resignations have been accepted as well amidst speculations that all is not well within the illegitimate interim regime . Even though Md Yunus has showered praises on the outgoing advisors , speculation is rife that the two fundamentalist advisors have resigned either due to differences within or because of their decision to strengthen the newly formed National Citizens Party (NCP) , sponsored by Yunus and the so-called student leaders who had steered the anti-Hasina uprising last year.
Sources from Bangladesh said that Mahfuj Alam and Asif Mahmud were appointed as advisers to the interim government as representatives of the student leaders who spearheaded the July uprising. Mahfuj Alam and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan have resigned from their posts as advisers to the interim government. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus accepted their resignations on Wednesday, which will take effect once the Election Commission announces the national election schedule, said Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam. The two advisers, representatives of the student leaders who led the July 2024 mass uprising, submitted their resignation letters at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Wednesday afternoon.Mahfuj had served as adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, while Asif Mahmud oversaw the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The Chief Adviser praised their contributions, saying: “The way you led the uprising and helped free the nation from fascist rule—the nation will remember that. I believe you will continue to play an active role in our democratic transition and progress. What you have given the nation in such a short time is unforgettable.”
He added: “The experience you gained in government must be put to use in the years ahead.” Following the fall of the Awami League government during the August 5, 2024, mass uprising, the interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus was formed on August 8 with an advisory council initially comprising 23 members.Mahfuj Alam had joined as special assistant to the Chief Adviser on August 28, 2024, and was sworn in as an adviser on November 10, later receiving the Information Ministry portfolio after Nahid Islam’s resignation.
Asif Mahmud initially held the Labor and Youth and Sports ministries, and in November 2024 took charge of the Local Government Ministry following the death of AF Hassan Ariff, while continuing to oversee Youth and Sports ministry.
