Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday reaffirmed the state government’s firm commitment to protecting human rights, stating that the administration takes immediate and decisive action whenever any incident of human rights violation comes to notice. He made this clear while inaugurating the International Human Rights Day celebrations at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala, organised by the Tripura Human Rights Commission.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that law and order and human rights are deeply interconnected, and only a strong and secure law-and-order environment can ensure a safe, dignified, and humane society for all.

Dr. Saha described human rights as a reflection of one’s own life experiences, explaining that through life’s journey, individuals learn what is just and unjust. Therefore, while implementing human rights laws, he emphasised the need for instilling values, awareness, and sensitivity in the minds and behaviour of every citizen.

This year’s Human Rights Day theme, “Human Rights Are Part of Our Daily Lives,” was highlighted by the Chief Minister, who said that the Indian Constitution itself encompasses all essential principles needed to safeguard human rights. However, he stressed that public awareness of human rights laws is crucial for these protections to be fully effective.

He cautioned against the misuse of human rights as a tool for unethical protests, disruptive activities, or unlawful behaviour, stating that such misuse dilutes the true purpose of human rights. Instead, he urged people to use human rights laws constructively, particularly in addressing domestic issues, and problems faced by women and children, which require both legal knowledge and humane understanding.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Dr. Saha noted that the Central Government has consistently prioritized human rights in policy formulation and implementation. He pointed to landmark welfare schemes such as Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat, which secure basic rights related to health, housing, and clean energy for millions of people across the country.

The Chief Minister further stated that the Northeast, once neglected in matters of development, is now progressing rapidly under the Prime Minister’s ‘Act East Policy’, which has brought peace, harmony, and developmental opportunities to the region. Tripura, too, is witnessing accelerated growth through various developmental programmes, he added.

During the event, Dr. Saha also launched a new newsletter of the Tripura Human Rights Commission. Established in 2016, the Commission has been actively working to safeguard human rights across the state.

Tripura Human Rights Commission Chairman Arindam Lodh, attending as a distinguished guest, said that the philosophy of human rights is closely linked with the spirit of Vande Mataram, explaining that the concept of human rights emerges from the fundamental rights of every individual.

Several senior officials also addressed the gathering, including Law Secretary Shankari Das, Director General of Police Anurag, Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty, and Tripura Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma. Their speeches highlighted actionable measures for strengthening human rights protection in respective sectors.

The welcome address was delivered by Tripura Human Rights Commission Secretary Dhanababu Reang, while the vote of thanks was presented by Commission official Dipankar Pal.

The event saw the presence of prominent personalities from various spheres and senior administrative officials, marking a significant observance of International Human Rights Day in the state.
