Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has called for a more people centric approach in bank lending, urging financial institutions to ease strict legal and documentation procedures that often hinder common people, especially various service providers, farmers and unemployed youth from accessing credit.

Speaking at a programme held at Kakraban Community Hall on Monday, organized by Punjab National Bank (PNB) as part of a Mega Agriculture Outreach Programme, the minister emphasized that despite several government supported loan schemes, many beneficiaries are still unable to secure loans due to excessive paperwork.

He noted that urgent financial needs of farmers and small entrepreneurs are frequently delayed because of documentation barriers, adding, Banks must consider the real challenges faced by common people. Many require loans immediately, but documentation issues create unnecessary hurdles. Bankers should adopt customer-friendly policies under various government initiatives to truly support farmers.

The event saw significant participation from farmers, self-help groups, and public representatives, creating a valuable platform for direct interaction between agricultural stakeholders and banking officials regarding agricultural loans and government backed schemes. Many also highlighted concerns over allegations of bribery and rigid banking norms, which further prevent eligible individuals from accessing government benefits designed for them.

However, contrasting these concerns, Surendra Nida, General Manager & OIC of the Reserve Bank of India’s Tripura Regional Office, asserted that banking services have expanded to the grassroots with a strong customer centric focus. He stated, Today, banks are equipped with customer-oriented services for the benefit of marginalized sections. The government is extending multiple facilities through banking channels. People must remain aware of services provided by the RBI and make proper use of these opportunities.

The programme was attended by MLA Jitendra Majumder, MLA Abhishek Deb Roy, Gomati Zilla Sabhadhipati Debal Deb Roy, Kakraban Panchayat Samiti Sabhadhipati Supriya Saha, PNB DGM & CH Rituraj Krishna, AGM & CH Bijon Kumar Mishra, and Kakraban BDO Anindya Dutta, among others.

The event concluded with discussions and grievance submissions, where several farmers and self-help groups reported unresolved issues related to the non-sanctioning of industrial and agricultural loans.
