Tripura University has come under renewed scrutiny following a series of allegations involving nepotism, violation of recruitment norms, financial misconduct, and punitive action against a executive engineer. The developments have raised concerns over the transparency and functioning of the central university.

At the centre of the controversy is the appointment of a Consultant Engineer, reportedly chosen recently jointly by the Vice-Chancellor (In-charge), Prof. Shyamal Das, and Registrar, Dr. Deepak Sharma. Critics allege that the appointment was made arbitrarily to siphon off exchequer’s money as per their whim.

A major concern stems from the manner in which Shri Subrata Paul received his appointment. According to internal communications, he was issued an appointment letter directly from the Registrar's office without facing any interview, a move widely viewed as a violation of codal norms that mandate public notice, transparency, and fair competition in recruitment.

The issue has revived long-standing accusations that Tripura University has become a breeding ground for nepotism. Observers point out past instances where former Vice-Chancellor Prof. GP Prasain and current Controller of Examinations, Dr. Chinmoy Roy, allegedly secured positions for their own son and daughter, respectively.

Simultaneously, the suspension of Executive Engineer Shri Krishna Das under suspension since 14 August 2025

continues to stir debate. Earlier reports highlighted his claim that the University stopped paying his subsistence allowance without prior notice from 1 October 2025, which he described as a violation of Article 21 (Right to Life) of the Constitution of India.

After receiving no relief from the Registrar despite writing on 1 November 2025, Shri Das approached the Tripura High Court, by filing an interlocutory application (IA). The hearing took place on 5 December 2025.

Based on the submissions, the Tripura High Court issued a significant interim order. Considering the facts presented, the Court ordered that until disposal of the writ petition, the respondent–Tripura University must pay the admissible subsistence allowance to Shri Krishna Das from October 2025 onwards. Furthermore, the Court directed that the petitioner shall attend the City Office at Gandhigram henceforth as part of the conditions.

Sources claim the University’s harsh stance against Shri Krishna Das is a result of his persistent legal interventions. Over the past year, he has filed six writ petitions before the High Court, each reportedly exposing various layers of corruption and administrative irregularities within the University.

With allegations piling up from questionable appointments to constitutional violations, the situation has sparked demands for an impartial inquiry to restore fairness, accountability, and public trust in Tripura University.
