Freak accident : huge banyan tree trunk falls on ration shop in Santi Nagar market under Durga Nagar village

In a freak accident the dealer of a ration shop Umapada Das (47) narrowly escaped with life after a big banyan tree trunk suddenly fell broken on his ration shop in Santinagar market under Durgapur panchayat under Kalyanpur police station in Khowai subdivision. This happened at a time when the ration shop was crowded with people queued up for drawing ration items.

Sources said that at the peak of rationing transaction hour around 10-00 AM a huge trunk of a banyan tree quite unexpectedly fell on the ration shop with a booming sound. The crowd of ration customers as well as the dealer Umapada Das barely managed to escape from within the shop after hearing the sound. However the roof of the ration shop was seriously damaged by the fallen tree trunk . The local people had rushed to the ration and helped people to escape though dealer Umapada Das sustained minor injuries. A nearby tea stall beside the ration was also severely damaged . The banyan tree still standing is very old and witness to major historical events.

Sources said that local people had seen the dangerously hanging condition of the banyan tree truck and had requested authorities to have it cut down but no action was taken by the forest department. But the forest department of Kalyanpur took no action to cut down the tree trunk in a scientific manner . The local people including the ration dealer Umapada Das and tea stall owner Haripada Majumder demanded compensation from the forest department for the loss they have suffered from the tree trunk fall.
