The faithful across the world are known for their nostalgic fascination for a violent and lawless past in the Arabian deserts and fond intention to recreate that past wherever they live as panacea for all ills, provided the numerical strength is appropriate for the purpose. This pertinent issue has come to the fore from speeches delivered by an array of leaders of fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami in the Circuit House ground in Mymensing district of anarchical Bangladesh on December 5. While addressing the ‘Jahil’Jamat supporter crowd the ‘Emir’ of the party Mujibur Rahaman proclaimed his party’s plan to enforce medieval ‘Sharia’ law in the country, if elected to power in the election slated to come off in February next year.
Spooked and alarmed by the declaration the progressive and liberal elements in Bangladesh have come out with sharp reaction to the ‘expression of Islamic devotion and commitment’ of the Emir. “The Jamat will never come to power on its own in Bangladesh and will never have the opportunity to make their wicked dream come true; they will be ousted by the people of Bangladesh , so there is nothing to worry about” said Shahidul Islam , a liberal author marginalised after the incumbent illegitimate government had seized the reins of power in August last year.
Elaborating on his point Shahidul Islam said that Jamat’s hollow and insane propaganda that those who do not abide by ‘Sharia’ law will have no place on this planet in life as in death fall flat on the fact that in none of the 57 Islamic countries of the world the ‘Sharia’ law is in force . “According to ‘Sharia’ , prevalent in the Arabian deserts in medieval times, a thief will have his or her hands cut off , those committing dacoity on roads will have their both legs and hands cut off, in case they strike any body they will be meted out capital punishment, those committing adultery will be stoned to death in case they are married and the unmarried ones will be subjected to one hundred lashes of a cane, for drinking liquor the culprit will be lashed 40-80 times, apostates and avowed disbelievers in Islam will be sentenced to capital punishment by painful means” said Shahidul.
He said that according to ‘Sharia’ child marriage and child rape or pedophilia is also permissible and, worse, if any complaint of rape is to be filed in ‘Sharia’ court it has to be supported by four male witnesses because in terms of Islamic law testimony of two women is equivalent to one man, otherwise the case can not be registered in ‘Sharia’ court. Besides, beating of women and depriving married women of carnal pleasure as a punishment is also held valid by ‘Sharia’ law among other barbaric medieval practices, worsened by difficulty faced by women in securing divorce, said Shahidul, asking how such medieval barbarity can be implemented in a country in the 21st century. The general public reaction to Jamat Emir’s statement in Bangladesh has also been adverse, sources said.
