Sujit Roy, Secretary Tripura Marchant Association yesterday took active part in the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) meeting of the Northeast Frontier Railway, Lumding Division, where he submitted a comprehensive written agenda outlining key infrastructural and passenger-related issues across major railway stations in Tripura. His submission, addressed to the Divisional Commercial Manager/IC, emphasized long-pending concerns affecting thousands of commuters daily.
Roy’s first agenda focused on the increase in frequency of the Agartala–Delhi Rajdhani Express, which at present runs only once a week. He highlighted that this infrequent service causes substantial inconvenience to long-distance passengers and urged that the train be introduced on a regular or increased frequency basis.
Railway Remarks: The proposal for Train No. 20501/20502 Agartala–Anand Vihar Terminal Tejas Rajdhani Express will be sent to headquarters with commercial justification and operational feasibility reports.
Raising a significant concern about passenger safety and congestion, Roy demanded an Additional Foot Overbridge (FOB) at Agartala Railway Station. The station presently depends on a single FOB, causing heavy crowding during peak hours.
Railway Remarks: The proposal for an additional FOB at Agartala station will be examined.
Roy also pointed out that two platforms at Agartala Railway Station still lack proper sheds, forcing passengers to stand exposed during rainfall and bad weather. He requested immediate installation of platform-level roofing.
Railway Remarks: The proposal for additional sheds at Agartala Railway Station will be examined.
Another major demand was the upgradation of Jogendranagar Railway Station from D-category to B-category. Roy noted that the station records high daily earnings of Rs. 19,605 and a footfall of around 840 passengers per day, which justifies an upgrade for improved facilities.
Railway Remarks: The matter will be examined for necessary upgradation.
A significant section of Roy’s agenda highlighted urgent repairs and improvements required at Jirania Railway Station, divided into three parts:
a) Goods (Businessman) Yard Renovation: The existing yard requires immediate maintenance and repair to ensure smooth freight handling.
b) Protection of Goods During Rainfall: Goods frequently get wet due to lack of sheds/coverings, causing potential damage. Roy requested construction of proper roofing.
c) Internal Station Road Repair: The access road used by the public is in poor condition and surrounded by overgrown vegetation, creating difficulty for commuters and workers. He urged clearing, repairing, and proper maintenance at the earliest.
Railway Remarks:
• Tender for the development of the goods yard and the Jirania circulating area is under finalization.
• Proposal for goods protection shed will be sent to the concerned department with justification.
• Road repair requirements have been forwarded to the concerned department.
Roy expressed serious dissatisfaction over the extremely slow progress of escalator and lift installation at Dharmanagar Railway Station. He stressed that the long delay inconveniences elderly passengers, patients, and general users. He also demanded construction of platform-level sheds under the overbridge area to protect passengers during rainfall.
Railway Remarks: The issue has been noted for early compliance.
Roy stated that the issues raised are directly linked to the daily travel hardship faced by people of Tripura and urged the railway administration to prioritize action. The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), who chaired the meeting, assured that all agenda points submitted by Sujit Roy would be thoroughly examined and addressed appropriately.
