The Government of Tripura is moving ahead with its ambitious Mukhyamantri Satellite Town Development Scheme (MM-STDS) with a total investment of Rs. 500 crore aimed at developing three satellite towns for Agartala, Udaipur and Dharmanagar. The project has reached a crucial stage, with land acquisition processes nearing completion. Once executed, the initiative will reshape Tripura’s urban landscape by creating planned cities equipped with modern infrastructure, new employment avenues and a significantly improved quality of life for citizens.
According to senior officials of the Tripura Urban Development Authority (TUDA), the Agartala satellite town project has entered the final stage of primary site selection in a location under Mohanpur Sub-Division. The area is set to be notified as a Special Planning Area.
Phase-1 development will begin on approximately 100 acres of government-owned land, ensuring a smooth and fast rollout without land acquisition hurdles. The proposed town will focus on diverse industrial activities that utilise Tripura’s agricultural strengths, creating a systematic ecosystem for agro-based industries and allied sectors.
TUDA is currently preparing the master plan, while advanced LiDAR topographical surveys are being launched to generate highly accurate terrain maps. This will enable precise planning of infrastructure components such as transport networks, utilities, and residential layouts.
The Agartala satellite town is planned to include well-designed road networks, water supply systems, sewerage lines, power distribution, water and sewage treatment plants, ICT infrastructure, parks and recreational spaces. The residential zones will offer both affordable and market-linked housing projects. Dedicated industrial spaces will accommodate R&D centres, incubation hubs and training facilities.
Officials estimate that the project will generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities, boost regional GDP through enhanced industrial activities, open export opportunities for value-added products, and decongest Agartala city by creating a world-class planned living environment nearby.
Detailing the Udaipur satellite town project, a TUDA spokesperson said the initiative marks a historic moment as it introduces Tripura’s first Land Pooling Scheme. The project site is located in the Rajarbag area under the Udaipur Sub-Division, covering 59.87 acres in Phase-1.
Under the land pooling approach, private landowners voluntarily contribute their land for structured urban development and later receive developed plots in return. The Draft Land Pooling Scheme is currently being prepared by TUDA.
The Udaipur satellite town will have integrated residential, commercial and mixed-use zones. Its proximity to the Matabari Temple offers significant scope for tourism-linked development, hospitality infrastructure, and cultural centres. The project is expected to boost local commercial activity, generate employment opportunities and establish Udaipur as an emerging regional growth hub.
The Dharmanagar satellite town project is currently at the site selection stage. A proposed location near Dharmanagar has undergone preliminary feasibility assessments, land suitability analysis, and stakeholder consultations.
Once the site is finalised, TUDA will begin comprehensive planning activities including joint surveys, preparation of a detailed master plan, and designing trunk infrastructure. The satellite town is expected to leverage Dharmanagar’s strategic connectivity through National Highways and its proximity to existing industrial zones. The project will integrate modern residential colonies, commercial areas, and industrial linkages to create a balanced and sustainable urban ecosystem.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha chaired an important TUDA Board Meeting yesterday at the TIFT Hall Room, where he reviewed ongoing developmental initiatives and deliberated on strategies to further strengthen urban infrastructure and public service delivery.
Following the meeting, Dr. Saha reiterated the government's resolve, stating:
“Our commitment remains steadfast to building a cleaner, smarter and more citizen-friendly Tripura.”
