In a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, police at Teliamura’s Trishabari Railway Station on Sunday detained a young woman carrying brown sugar worth Rs. 7 lakh, allegedly while transporting it from Silchar. The arrested woman is the wife of a BJP leader from Khayerpur, according to police sources.

Acting on a specific intelligence tip-off, Teliamura police set up surveillance at the railway station and intercepted the woman as she arrived with the illegal consignment. Upon being caught with the narcotics, the woman reportedly broke down in tears. Her marital home is in Khayerpur, while her parental home is in the Surjamaninagar area. She has been formally arrested and taken into custody by Teliamura Police.

Police officials stated that the accused had been involved in brown sugar trafficking for a considerable period and had earned significant amounts of money through the trade. “This is not her first time. Her husband is also involved in facilitating the business,” an officer said, adding that the widespread availability of the drug has pushed many parents into a desperate struggle to protect their children.

The arrest has sparked concern in Teliamura, particularly given the alleged political links involved. Police have initiated further investigation to trace the wider network behind the brown sugar supply chain and identify additional suspects connected to the operation.
