Even though the state of school education system all over the state is in a deep crisis , the situation has reached its nadir in Kailasahar, headquarter of the Unakoti district. According to sources from Kailasahar, the Kailasahar Senior Basic School, located in the Kazirgaon area of the town, has remained closed for over a year now and the teachers of the school have already been posted in other schools in and around Kailasahar.

But the plight of the Bimal Singha Junior Basic School located in the Bimal Singha Complex area of the town is pathetic even as it is also awaiting early closure. According to information made available by sources from Kailasahar , there are only six students now in the Bimal Singha Complex Junior Basic school and there are two teachers to teach them. Even though the teachers come daily all the students never come to the school at a time. Even on Thursday only two students-a boy and a girl-came to the school. These two students sang the national anthem , standing in front of the teachers and then entered the school. The two teachers currently posted in the school are Swapna De and Priti Sinha and the former is the in charge of the school.

Speaking to media persons the school in charge Swapna De said that as a junior basic school there are classes from I to V only in the school and even though there is only one student in class I, there is no student in class II. There are two students each in classes III and IV but again there is only one student in class V. But all the students never come to school on regular basis. “We take classes of students who come to school and provide them midday school also but there was a time when we had around 70 students in the school but they have shifted to other schools’ said in-charge Swapna De. She added that there are two other government schools and three privately run schools within four hundred metres of the Bimal Singha Complex Junior Basic school. The situation is worsened by the fact that most of the guardians now prefer to have their wards admitted to English medium school and this is the reason why guardians avoid having their children admitted to the Bimal Singha Complex junior basic school. There had been attempts made in 2016 and 2017 to have teachers and students of the school shifted to a neighbouring schools but the matter did not progress after the change of government in 2018,

The Inspector of Schools in Kailasahar Radhan Tripura also conceded the problem and said that the matter has been brought to the notice of higher authority with a plea for shifting the students and teachers to a neighbouring school but no decision has been taken yet. “Unless we receive a clear direction from higher authority we can not do anything on our own but it is a fact that the Kazir Gaon senior basic school has remained closed for more than a year while the student strength in the Bimal Singha Complex Junior Basic school is next to nothing” said IS Badhan Tripura.
