The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to take drastic action to evict encroachers on the illegally filled up portion of historic pond of the ‘Prabhubari’ (royal priests and preceptor) south of Laxmi Narayan Bari temple across the main road. The AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, accompanied by Corporator of Ward no-20 Ratna Datta and AMC commissioner D.K.Chakma and a number of junior officials visited the site of the pond spread over 1.5 ‘Kani’ (17,280 square feet) and announced the decision to evict the encroachers and recover the illegally occupied land for beautification. Official sources said that a section of local residents had brought the matter of illegal filling of the pond and construction over the encroached land to the notice of the chief minister Dr Manik Saha who directed the AMC to reclaim the stolen land and beautify it . Accordingly the Mayor, Coporator and AMC commissioner visited the spot.

Sources said that the sprawling pond had been lying in a state of decay marked by growth of wild shrubs and bushes and a section of unscrupulous elements encroached it and sold it to some land buyers by having land records tampered . Recently there has been an attempt to fill up more areas of the pond for illegal sale and construction . Verifying the matter at the ground level the Mayor Dipak Majumder announced that the illegal occupiers would be required to physically appear at the AMC office within next three days with their documents and papers and in case any irregularity and tampering is proved all of them will be evicted and even bulldozers will be used to demolish illegal constructions .

The pond belonging to ‘Prabhubari’ has been known to be a historic place associated with Tripura’s royal family as the ‘Prabhus’ (Brahmin priests) had earlier worked as royal priests . They used to be honoured by successive kings themselves and Bipin Bihari Goswami , the royal priest and ‘Prabhu’ had once been a very powerful and influential advisor of kings Ishan Manikya (1849-1862) and his descendants also worked as priests. This sprawling pond around which still the descendants of ‘Prabhubari’ live is also a historic site and, keeping this in mind the chief minister Dr Manik Saha has ordered its restoration and beautification.
