Serious questions have been raised over the efficiency of both the police and the judiciary after the accused persons in a shocking public humiliation case were released on bail despite the severity of the crime. The incident, which involved forcibly shaving the head of a young female content creator and two others in full public view, has triggered widespread criticism.

According to reports, three content creators, including a young woman were detained by local residents in the Ashwini Market area under suspicion of drug use and theft under Amtali police station in west Tripura District. In a disturbing display of mob vigilantism, the group was assaulted, their heads forcibly shaved, and videos of the incident were circulated across social media platforms. Many have condemned the brutality, calling it a heinous act that could ruin the future of the young woman involved.

Following public pressure, Amtali Police arrested a local resident, Debashis Dey (28), on Tuesday morning. To highlight the arrest, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Amtali Police Station, Paritosh Das, even held a press briefing at the station, presenting the accused before the media as a demonstration of swift police action. Assistant Sub-Inspector Kakoli Dutta was also part of the investigation.

However, despite the public display of confidence by the police, the case took an unexpected turn when the court granted bail to Debashis Dey the same afternoon. Reports suggest that the police failed to provide sufficient evidence to warrant the cancellation of bail, leading to mounting suspicions and criticism. Many questioned whether the arrest was merely a publicity exercise or whether there were lapses, intentional or otherwise in the police report presented before the court.

Adding to the controversy, social activists and observers have pointed out the stark contrast in judicial decisions. While the accused in this severe public humiliation case were granted bail within hours, content creator Madhavi Biswas has reportedly been held in jail for nearly three months over allegations of using offensive language on social media. This disparity has sparked debates on selective justice and inconsistent court rulings.

Meanwhile, residents and rights groups have condemned the mob’s actions, stating that taking the law into their own hands and humiliating a young woman in such a manner is a grave criminal offence. Questions have also been raised about why police failed to prevent the public circulation of the video, which has caused immense psychological damage to the victim.

The incident has not only exposed deep flaws in policing but has also reignited concerns over community vigilantism, misuse of social media, and the need for strong, unbiased legal procedures. Public confidence in law enforcement and the justice system continues to erode as more such cases come to light.
