Presumably following strict instructions from high-ups in the department the police in Bishalgarh, otherwise known for incompetence and indirect collaboration with gangs of criminals and anti-socials, this morning cracked down hard on widespread ‘Ganja’ (cannabis) cultivations in two whole ADC villages. In the massive operation as many as 3 lakh ‘Ganja’ plants standing in 70 plots were destroyed but there was no resistance to the destruction programme except exhortations by the owners of the plantations.

Official sources from Bishalgarh said that , acting on specific information obtained in advance a large posse of police , TSR, CRPF and forest protection force jawans-both men and women-led by officer in charge (OC) of Bishalgarh police station Bijay Das this morning stormed the Raghunandan Thakur para and Jagatrampur villages under the Bangshibari ADC village . The security force systematically destroyed about 3 lakh ‘Ganja’ bearing plants standing on 70 plots . There was no attempt at resistance from the ‘Ganja’ planters who saw the destruction of their plants though some of them implored the security forces to desist from destruction work on the plea that they had planted the ‘Ganja’ trees to have their daughters married or the purpose of costly treatment . They also told the police that if the plants were destroyed the would become destitutes .

But the combined security forces did not relent and completed the destruction process . The OC (Bishalgarh) Bijay Das merely told the illegal planters that ‘Ganja’ cultivation is a criminal offence and the plantations needed to be destroyed. He later told media persons that the operation carried out today will continue all over the subdivision.
