Largescale deforestation and lack of proper living conditions within the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary have been driving wild animals including reptiles to areas of human habitation . This was noticed yet again on the bank of a pond and beside a road in Puran Bari area under Charilam forest range under Bishalgarh subdivision yesterday in the evening.

Sources from Charilam said that yesterday early in the morning a group of people on their way back home from Charilam market came across a big python weighing about 100 kgs lying beside the road on the bank of a pond owned by Binoy Karmakar. Scared of the snake’s presence the group of people created a stir and called out people for help. Many residents of the Puran Bari area rushed to the spot and decided to contact the Charilam forest range office by mobile phone.

After being informed of the scary presence of the python the forest beat officer Sukanta Das rushed to the spot with his forest staff and managed to put the the python in a sack and took it away. But before leaving the spot Sukanta Das in an informal chat with the local residents said that the Puran Bari area is very close to the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary and that is why the animals including reptiles find it easy to make their way out and seek refuge in the area. . He said that the python would be set free in the forest area close to the Sepahijala zoo to ensure its safety.
