Setting initial misgivings at rest, the purportedly ‘non-communal’ Bangladeshi media-the word ‘secular’ is anathema to the majority faithful in the country-seem to have traced out their original roots. This is reflected in the denial by Chittagong press club of permission to the leaders of ‘Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote’ to hold a press conference today. Sources from across the border said that the ‘Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote’ had booked a space in Chittagong press club by paying up due rent and fulfilling other formalities to hold a press conference today. But this morning the ‘non-communal’ press club authority have informed the ‘Sammilito Sanatani Jote’ leaders of refusal to let the press conference happen, presumably under pressure from the hare-brained fundamentalist brethren. Sources said that the ‘Jote’ leaders will have to fix a different date and place to address the faithful media.

Meanwhile, in a grisly incident a Hindu mother and son were murdered and hanged by a gang of suspected fundamentalist goons in Pakerhal Khansama area under Dinajpur district yesterday in blood-stained Bangladesh. Sources said that a Hindu mother Sujata Dey (35) was raped by a gang of fundamentalist goons at home in the absence of her husband and both herself and her twelve year old son who had been witness to the crime were strangled to death and then hanged to project the crime as suicide. Police is yet to act on the matter and perhaps never will.
