A man identified as Bidhan Bhowmik, reported to be the maternal cousin of former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik has been arrested by West Agartala Women Police Station following a domestic violence complaint lodged by his Bangladeshi wife, Aakhi Bhowmik. The arrest has brought to light serious allegations regarding illegal entry from Bangladesh and fraudulent Indian identity documents.
Police confirmed that Bidhan Bhowmik was detained based on his wife’s complaint, which accused him of physical and mental abuse. During the preliminary inquiry, Aakhi Bhowmik alleged that her husband had been living in Tripura illegally after entering from Bangladesh and had obtained Aadhaar, citizenship-related papers, PRTC, and other documents using forged information.
According to police sources, an investigation has now begun into the authenticity of the identity documents held by the accused. Officers stated that while the arrest was made on the basis of the domestic violence complaint, the allegations regarding Bangladesh nationality and forged documents will be probed separately.
During interactions with journalists, the accused reportedly admitted that he is related to former Minister Pratima Bhoumik and claimed that he was brought to Tripura around 25 years ago. He also alleged that he had been adopted by Pratima Bhoumik’s father. These claims have not yet been verified by the authorities.
Police officials informed that Bidhan and his wife had been residing in the Indranagar locality of Agartala, while his original address was mentioned as Dhanpur under Sepahijala District. Investigators suspect that a forged Dhanpur address and supporting documents were used to obtain Aadhaar, PRTC, and other official papers.
Aakhi Bhowmik, in her statement to police, alleged that her husband used the name of former Minister Pratima Bhoumik and her family members to facilitate the creation of illegal documents. Police have begun examining these allegations and have confirmed that Bidhan Bhowmik remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Authorities stated that further details will emerge only after verification of all documents and interrogation of the accused.
