Renowned ISRO scientist and Tripura’s pride, Subrata Chakraborty, has called for the establishment of a dedicated ISRO Regional Centre in Northeast India, citing the region’s strategic importance and growing scientific infrastructure. Chakraborty made the remark day before yesterday during his felicitation ceremony at NERIST, where he received the NERIST Alumni Excellence Award from the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) KT Parnaik.

Chakraborty, who has played key engineering roles in India’s Chandrayaan missions and is currently associated with the Gaganyaan project, emphasized that the Northeast holds significant potential for advanced space research. He noted that the presence of premier institutions, including an IIT and nearly ten NITs across the region, provides the ideal ecosystem for setting up such a centre. He urged all Chief Ministers of Northeast India to collectively pursue this demand.

Chakraborty also announced that after his retirement from ISRO, he plans to settle in the Northeast and contribute to scientific and technological development for the benefit of the region's people.Hailing from Indranagar, Agartala, Tripura, Subrata Chakraborty completed his early education in his home state before graduating from the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) and later obtaining his master's degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, after which he joined ISRO.Chakraborty was an integral member of the engineering teams behind Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 missions. While Chandrayaan-2 did not achieve a successful lunar landing, his contributions were acknowledged widely across the Northeast. His continued involvement in Chandrayaan-3, which made history by achieving a soft landing near the Moon’s south pole in August 2023, brought further acclaim, with celebrations led by organizations and government leaders in Tripura.

Chakraborty’s continued commitment to space science and regional development has made him a source of inspiration for the Northeast, especially Tripura.
