The Tipra Motha Party, which has long advocated for Tipraland or greater autonomy for the indigenous population of Tripura, has demanded that the state government hand over the Home Department to one of its Tipra Motha ministers. The demand comes at a time when sections of Tipra Motha supporters have allegedly carried out a series of violent incidents in Takarjala, Jampuijala, and Khumlung areas over the past several days.

On Tuesday, Tipra Motha supporters allegedly vandalized the BJP party office in Khumlung and locked the local police station. The party’s supporters have reportedly been involved in earlier instances of arson, vandalism, and attacks on offices belonging to various political groups and administrative facilities.

In response to the unrest, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha visited Khumlung today to inspect the affected areas and review the situation firsthand. He reportedly instructed authorities to take strict legal action against those involved in the violence.

Speaking to journalists after the Chief Minister’s visit, Tipra Motha leader and Cabinet Minister Animesh Debbarma issued a strong statement demanding that the Home portfolio be assigned to a Tipra Motha Minister.

According to Debbarma, law and order in Tripura can be restored within three months if the Home Ministry is handed over to their party. “Make one of us the Home Minister. We know how to establish rule of law in Tripura,” he told the media.

The remarks have sparked political debate, especially as they come at a time when the state government is under pressure to contain ethnic and political tensions in tribal-dominated regions.

The government has not yet issued an official response to the demand. Further developments are awaited.
