Tension escalates in Khumulwng after attack on BJP leader’s residence

Tension prevailed in Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, prompting the police to deploy additional security personnel to restore order. A senior police official said the situation had been brought under control, with adequate forces stationed to prevent any further escalation.The Khumulwng–Takarjala belt in West Tripura has remained on edge for the past two days following a joining programme organised by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha. DIG Northern Range Rati Ranjan Debnath rushed to Khumulwng to supervise security arrangements, and patrolling has been intensified in sensitive areas.

Trouble flared after the residence of BJP leader Sahid Debbarma was attacked on Thursday evening. Masked miscreants allegedly entered the house and vandalised household items including a television and refrigerator. His wife said her pleas for mercy were ignored. A BJP worker injured during a scuffle in Takarjala on Wednesday is undergoing treatment at GB Pant Hospital, where BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee visited him.

Tipra Motha MLA Biswajit Kalai accused the BJP of triggering the tension after its joining event, alleging attacks on his party workers and expressing dissatisfaction over the police response. He urged immediate measures to restore peace.
