The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) yesterday solemnly observed the 109th birth anniversary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi through a slew of traditional programmes . All the leaders of the party including PCC president Asish Kumar Saha, other senior leaders and Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha hoisted the party flag in the Congress Bhawan in the heart of Agartala , besides garlanding Indira Gandhi’s portrait and offering floral tributes to the former prime minister’s tomb in the Gandhighat cemetery of the town where the ashes after cremation of Indira had been put underground. These programmes evoked heartening response from party workers.
But the most resonating party programmes on the occasion were organized by former PCC president and incumbent MLA Gopal Chandra Roy in altogether 14 locations in his Banamalipur constituency. Between 6-00 AM and 9-00 AM Gopal Roy hoisted the national flag and took part in the portrait garlanding functions in all 14 locations where packets of biscuits, chocolates and sweets were also distributed among children and senior citizens who attended the programmes in impressive numbers. Additionally , there was also a programme of ‘Mahaprasad’ (Khichirri) distribution among people in the locations among people who had attended the programmes. Fearing possibility of disruption by miscreants of BJP Gopal Chandra Roy had requested for security arrangement by police and this was provided. “ I had asked for police security for peaceful organisation of the programme and the police did provide security cover but , in spite of that, BJP miscreants tried to disrupt my programme in certain places and abused me ; it is shameful that the birth anniversary of India’s greatest prime minister can not be observed peacefully in BJP ruled Tripura because of disturbances created by the miscreants aligned with the BJP” said Gopal Roy ruefully.
