The Tripura Council of Ministers has approved the creation of two new state universities, including the state’s first technical university and its first women’s university, Cabinet spokesman and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Tuesday.

With this decision, the number of state-run universities in Tripura will rise to three. At present, Maharaja Bir Bikram University is the only state university in the state.

Briefing reporters at the civil secretariat after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Chowdhury said the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) will be upgraded into the state’s first technical university.

“The state council of ministers has approved the proposal of setting up Tripura’s first technical university. Tripura Institute of Technology will be upgraded and all polytechnic colleges of the state will eventually be brought under it once procedures are completed,” he said.

The Cabinet has also decided to upgrade the Women’s College in Agartala into a Women’s University. “This will be Tripura’s first of its kind institution dedicated to women’s higher education,” Chowdhury added.

The minister said the Cabinet further approved creation and filling up of 385 posts in various government departments.

Under the Co-operative Department, 97 posts of Auditor, Investigator and Statistical Investigator will be filled through the Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT), while 28 Supervisor posts under ICDS projects will be recruited through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC).

The Cabinet sanctioned 14 new technical posts — in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Public Health Engineering — under the Urban Development Department, and agreed to engage eight faculty and support staff for the Tripura Film & Television Institute.

Under the Social Welfare Department, 119 new Anganwadi Centres will be opened along with 119 posts of Anganwadi Workers and 119 posts of Anganwadi Helpers, he said.
