Amidst a sullen lull in Bangladesh over the death sentence handed down to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her lieutenant and former home minister Asaduzzaman Kamal by the rigged International Crime Tribunal Yesterday , sporadic violence has been reported from different parts of the country. Shortly after the biased and pre-fixed verdict had been proclaimed yesterday a large group of frenzied Jamat-e-Islami and BNP supporters had rushed to 32-Dhanmondi area of Dhaka to wipe out whatever remained of ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman’s historic residence that had been demolished after the ouster of the Awami League government in August last year. But this time a large group of Awami League supporters had also reached the place in anticipation of what might happen. Both the groups engaged in a heavy exchange of stone pelting . But before any untoward incident could happen a large posse of police force deployed there by the government intervened and dispersed the violent crowd on both sides.

But the situation took an ugly turn last night in Gopal Ganj area, native place of ‘Bangabandhu’ and his family, under Faridpur district as a crowd of people , believed to be Awami League supporters, hurled petrol bombs at the police station . This caused little damage but three constables identified as Irin Nahar (31), Arif Hossain (33) and Nazrul Islam (57) sustained minor injuries. The officer in charge of Gopal Ganj police station Khandakar Hafizur Rahaman told media persons that the three constables had been discharged from local hospital after first aid and suspected that the Awami League supporters might have hurled the petrol bomb.

Apart from this, the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), acting at the behest of the interim government , has urged upon all media outlets-print, electronics and web-not to print, show or upload online statements and speeches of exiled prime minister Sheikh Hasina to prevent unrest in the country. In a statement the NCSA said that the government is authorized by relevant provisions of cyber law to block any online or visual flow of speeches and statements of Hasina who now stands convicted of death by the ICT, threatening the media that any transgression in this regard will lead to legal action also.

Meanwhile, the law advisor in the interim government Asif Nazrul has said that the government of India should extradite Sheikh Hasina, sheltered in Delhi, to face the capital punishment meted out to her. Nazrul who is a known fundamentalist said that it is incumbent upon the government of India to extradite Sheikh Hasina as per provisions of the extradition treaty signed by the two countries. However, the government of India is unlikely to extradite Hasina as there is a provision in the treaty which excludes persons given political asylum from extradition . The Awami League leaders and supporters are also looking up to India for succor in this hour of crisis.
