Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha on Sunday said that preserving political, social, and cultural harmony is one of the key responsibilities of journalists, who act as the mirror of society. Speaking at the National Press Day celebration organised by the ICA Department at Sukanta Academy Auditorium, he noted that accurate news dissemination is an art and that journalism, though a profession, is best practised with a strong sense of duty.

This year’s theme, “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation,” highlights the growing challenges faced by the media. The Chief Minister underlined the essential role of newspapers and journalists in strengthening democracy and emphasised that while freedom of speech is vital, journalists must remain vigilant and responsible in their reporting. He stressed the need for collective efforts to tackle misinformation spreading through social media.

Dr Saha urged senior journalists to conduct monthly workshops to help young reporters improve their skills and uphold ethical standards. Recalling the murder of two journalists in earlier years, he assured that efforts continue to ensure justice. He added that the government remains committed to journalists’ safety and welfare, with several committees formed by the ICA Department whose recommendations will be implemented in phases.

Executive Editor Manas Pal, Editor Shanit Debroy, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, ICA Secretary Dr P. K. Chakraborty, and ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee attended the programme. Two senior journalists, Pranamay Saha and Anupam Bhattacharjee, were felicitated with shawls, mementos, and financial honorariums.
