An early-morning community bird-walk titled 'Morning with Birds' was organised at MBB College Lake, Agartala, on Sunday as part of the nationwide celebration of Young Birders Month (YBM). The event drew enthusiastic participation from children, students and parents, despite concerns that bird activity around the lake has declined in recent years due to newly constructed concrete structures near the habitat.

Observed across India throughout November 2025, Young Birders Month commemorates the birth anniversary of legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the Birdman of India, whose birthday falls on November 12. YBM is an initiative of Early Bird, the nature-education wing of the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF).

In Agartala, the bird-walk was led by Dr. Dipak Sinha, Assistant Professor, College of Agriculture, Tripura and Regional Coordinator of Bird Count India, along with experienced birdwatcher Dipankar Dev. Nearly 30 participants took part in the walk, which introduced young nature enthusiasts to the rich birdlife in and around the lake.

During the session, the group spotted a variety of resident and migratory species, including Whistling Ducks, Kingfishers, Orioles, Barbets, Parakeets and Green Pigeons. The organisers highlighted the importance of family participation, noting that parent–child involvement plays a vital role in maintaining long-term interest in nature and wildlife.

To make the event more engaging for younger birders, interactive nature-based games such as Heron & Snipe and Bird Whisper were conducted.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sinha emphasised that early exposure to nature-based outdoor activities significantly enhances children’s ecological awareness. Encouraged by the strong response, the organisers announced plans to hold more community-centric nature programmes in the coming months to nurture a growing community of young birdwatchers in Tripura.
