The Rural Development Department of Tripura, in collaboration with the Tripura Space Application Centre (TSAC), has successfully completed the mapping of the state’s administrative boundaries using advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.

According to officials, the initiative was undertaken following discrepancies found between MGNREGA assets and panchayat boundaries, as well as challenges in implementing key schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The project, launched in 2021, was carried out in two phases — first through GPS-based manual data collection and later through analysis using high-resolution satellite imagery.

Dr. Sujit Das, scientist at TSAC, said that accurate delineation of administrative boundaries is vital for effective governance and planning. He added that the satellite imagery used offered exceptional clarity, enabling precise verification.

Boundaries for all 1,176 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees were finalised after verification by Block Development Officers and certified by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala.

Officials said the GIS-based approach will enhance planning, monitoring, and resource allocation by replacing manual survey work with digital precision, making administrative and developmental operations in Tripura faster and more efficient.
