A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), apex investigating authority at the federal level, arrived here on November 10 and have been raiding multiple locations , apparently to ascertain the state of illegal infiltration of shady Bangladeshi nationals, Rohingiyas and criminals from across the border. The NIA team which generally avoid contact with media persons could not be reached for information about the nature of raids and the specific assignment on which they had come here. The state police sources also kept mum on the issue .
Sources however said that shortly after arriving here the NIA team got in touch with the state police authority and have already raided two places in Kumarghat and another place in the sensitive border town of Kailasahar, headquarter of Unakoti district. But what they have searched for and what they have recovered so far are still unknown even though the raids are likely to continue.
Sources said that , spurred by the recent bomb blasts near the Red Fort area in Delhi , the NIA, acting upon instructions from the union home ministry, have intensified their operations. In the year 2023 a Bangladeshi national with an extremely shady background had been arrested in Assam after reaching that state across Tripura. In the course of interrogation the Bangladeshi national had revealed many facts and the Crime Branch of Assam police had referred the case to NIA. It is believed that in the wake of further revelations made by the Bangladeshi national the NIA team have arrived here now to carry forward the ongoing investigation.
Besides, sources said, Tripura has emerged over the past several years as a safe ingress point and corridor of Bangladeshi infiltrators because of the collaborative activities of police personnel posted in bordering police stations, treacherous elements of the ruling party out to make easy money and a section of corrupt BSF personnel. The NIA is well aware of what has been happening in Tripura’s bordering areas vis-à-vis infiltration from Bangladesh and this angle is also likely to be thoroughly looked into by the NIA team. Even though speculation is rife that the NIA team have arrived here to look into the drug smuggling and peddling angle including recent seizures from a railway carriage in Jirania police station, there is no confirmation that the team has come for investigation into the drug smuggling and peddling racket, sources added.
