The Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Dr Bram teaching hospital run by a government constituted society seem to be moving on an autopilot. The top-heavy administration is manned by malleable and retired bureaucrats who mint money from the college and hospital and fleece exorbitant salaries but they care nothing for the pay , facilities of teachers, non-teaching staff and stipends for students . But the latest instance of the management’s high-handed arbitrariness is reflected in the ‘entry bar’ order slapped on more than special duty nurses-all women who used to serve patients as special nurses at night or daytime. These hapless women would earn limited amounts from the relatives of patients and maintain their families.
But the heartless TMC management has recently barred their entry into the hospital , presumably to pave the way for take-over of this service by a dubious company from outside the state in lieu of hefty commission for those manning the top level of the management. Whether this has been done under political pressure is not clear but this decision has deprived more than a hundred women special duty nurses of their livelihood . The TMC management however bother little about these small things.
These helpless women , victims of TMC management’s commission trade, had gone to register their complaints to the MLA of the area Meena Rani Sarkar but on their way back they were hauled up by personnel of AD Nagar police station and detained for a long time. This has caused serious resentment among not only the special duty nurses but also among people who live close to the TMC hospital and college. The leader of the association with which these women are registered, Malin Debbarma strongly protested the debarring of the special duty nurses as ‘inhuman’ and condemned the decision of the TMC management. He said that these women had been rendering service for a long time and the management could make them undergo refresher training but they have been arbitrarily barred from entry into the hospital . Malin asserted that this must have been done to give benefit to a private labour supply company in lieu of hefty commission and indicated that the matter will be protested.
