There is an old adage that justice delayed is justice denied but this does not hold water in all cases as evident from the verdict of the Kailasahar district and session court in a domestic violence and murder case. This crucial lesson has been learned to his cost by Rameej Ali (35), a resident of Khaorabil village under Irani police station in Kailasahar subdivision yesterday. Rameej was sentenced to life term with a fine of Rs 50 thousand for murdering his wife in broad daylight and an additional three years for domestic violence compounded by another fine of Rs 50 thousand. Both the sentences will run simulataneously unless commuted by high court upon appeal.

Giving details sources from Kailasahar said that in May 2019 Rameej Ali had socially married Roshenara Begum of neighbouring Dhaliakandi village and the couple spent the first few months happily. But then Rameej came to his original self and started torturing his wife demanding more dowry which Roshenara’s mother Nesharun Bibi was unable to give. The relation between the husband and wife worsened and it was on January 6 2020 within six months of their marriage that Rameej Ali murdered his wife by hitting her with a spade on the head repeatedly and fled the area. After being informed Roshenara’s mother came and saw his daughter’s condition lying in a pool of blood and filed a complaint with the Irani police station.

The fugitive Rameej was nabbed by the inquiry officer Aparna Debnath who also filed the charge-sheet on May 31 with the district and session. In the course of a long trial in which only two persons gave testimony in favour of Rameej Ali and 22 against him, Rameej was found guilty of domestic violence as well as murder. The sentencing was pronounced by the district and session judge Sudipta Chowdhury yesterday.
