In a significant political development, Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha yesterday in Agartala and held discussions on a range of important issues concerning the state and the indigenous communities of Tripura.
Sources indicate that the meeting covered several matters, including the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, administrative concerns in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and the overall welfare of the tribal population. While both leaders maintained silence regarding the specific outcomes of the discussion, political observers believe the meeting holds significance amid the current turbulence within the Tipra Motha.
At present, Tripura’s self-proclaimed king Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma is facing increasing pressure, both from within his party and from external political forces. The Tipra Motha, which once stood firmly behind the demand for Greater Tipraland (GTL), now appears to be toning down that stance, redirecting its focus toward the forthcoming TTAADC elections.
The party has recently shifted attention to the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, signed with the government with the promise that its provisions would be executed within six months. However, nearly 18 months have passed with little visible progress, leading to growing dissatisfaction among party members and supporters.
Despite Pradyot’s occasional public outbursts and his warnings of withdrawing support from the government, both the state and central BJP leaderships seem to have adopted a calm and calculated approach, showing no immediate concern to his political maneuvers.
Meanwhile, the BJP has stepped up its activities in the hills, organizing joining ceremonies, development programs, and administrative outreach drives under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The government’s continuous efforts to strengthen its foothold in tribal areas have started yielding political dividends, further challenging Tipra Motha’s dominance in its core regions.
Political analysts believe Pradyot now finds himself at a crossroads, struggling to maintain internal unity within the Tipra Motha while simultaneously facing a strategic and organizational challenge from the BJP. The delay in realizing the promises of the Tiprasa Accord and growing uncertainty over his political direction have reportedly sparked frustration and confusion within party ranks.
As the TTAADC polls approach, all eyes are on Pradyot’s next move following his meeting with the Chief Minister, a meeting that may define the future course of tribal politics in Tripura.
