A political storm has erupted in Tripura after Congress MLA and former state party president Birajit Sinha accused Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy of harbouring an illegal Bangladeshi national and concealing criminal antecedents in his election affidavit.
Sinha alleged that a Bangladeshi man, identified as Sanjay Chakraborty, was employed as a cook at Roy’s residence during Durga Puja and had aided two Bangladeshi women, including a minor, to illegally cross the border. Both women were detained and named Chakraborty in their statements, Sinha claimed, adding that the man has since assumed a new identity as Dipak Chakraborty.
The Congress leader said he had written to Chief Minister Manik Saha and the state DGP seeking a probe, asserting that the incident reflects a larger pattern of unchecked illegal immigration.
Sinha further accused Roy of failing to disclose a criminal case filed against him by a local journalist in his election affidavit, terming it a violation of the Representation of the People Act. He also questioned the authenticity of Roy’s educational qualification, claiming his Class XII certificate was from an unrecognised board in Madhya Pradesh.
The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.
