Resentment in police over political flip flops and contradictory instructions

A deep resentment is simmering in Tripura over flip flops at the political level in giving permission for political programmes of the opposition and then allowing unauthorized programmes of the ruling . Even though this has happened many times in the past , what happened in Satchand on Tuesday last has further fuelled the simmering anger. Sources from Sabroom said that on Tuesday last the Sabroom subdivisional committee of the CPI (M) in association with the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) and the Tribal Youth Federation (TYF) had organised a massive procession for meeting in deputation with the BDO (Satchand) with a memorandum containing a seven point charter of demands . Appropriate permission from the police had been obtained in time and the procession had commenced in time under the leadership of state secretary Jiten Chowdhury.
But in order to sabotage the programme the BJP ‘Mandal’ in Satchand had started a religious programme in the Satchand Block headquarter in front of the BDO office without any authorization from the police. As a result the policemen on duty blocked the CPI (M)’s procession ahead of the BDO office citing possibility of political clash with the BJP supporters. But as the CPI (M) state secretary Jiten Chowdhury confronted the police asking how they could block an authorized programme in stead of driving away the BJP supporters engaged in an unauthorized religious programme the police officer had no answer. They implored the CPI (M) leaders to desist from going ahead with the procession and later SDM (Sabroom) spoke to the crowd through a microphone , practically tendering an apology and requesting those participating in the procession to hold the programme there itself in stead of going ahead. The CPI (M), GMP and TYF leadership, unwilling to precipitate matters, obliged the police having registered their verbal protest. Later on in the absence of the BDO (Satchand) who had gone to attend a meeting called by the DM (south) the DCM in charge of the block office accepted the memorandum submitted by the CPI (M) leadership after coming out of the office and also tendered an apology for blocking of the CPI (M)’s authorized procession.
Highly placed sources in police said that a phone call had gone to the DGP from secretariat asking why the programme of the opposition was being blocked even after giving permission. The DGP is also stated to have intervened in the matter but by that time the CPI (M), TYF and GMP leaders had submitted their memorandum. This incident has caused serious resentment in the police force as they feel that over zeal of the local leaders of the ruling party is making the police the proverbial sacrificial goat in the political cross-currents and growing resentment is likely to manifest itself in the functioning of the police force.
