Rejuvenated by growing public support across the state, the CPI (M) is taking major political initiatives to revamp the organization as well as to mobilize people against what they describe as ‘anti-people policies and programmes of ruling BJP’. As part of the political initiative the Tripura unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), trade union arm of the party, is preparing to hold a massive rally in the Swami Vivekananda ground on November 10. The campaign for the rally on a ten point charter of demands is in final stage and a massive turn-out is expected on the day as people from different parts of the state will be mobilized for the meeting. While the CITU state president and secretary, former minister Manik Dey and former MP Sankar Prasad Datta will address the rally, the state secretary and politburo member Jiten Chowdhury and former chief minister Manik Sarkar will also attend the rally as guests of honour and speakers.

Sources in the CITU said that the state police acting at the behest of the government has adopted a dilatory tactics in granting permission for the rally on November 10 and despite timely application having been filed formal permission is yet to be granted though persuasion is on. However, the CITU leadership is determined to hold the rally on 10th November. “In case police refuse permission the rally will be held on the road between Orient Chowmuhuni and Rabindra Shata Varshiki Bhawan Chowmuhuni on the appointed day; the BJP government always creates obstacles in the way of political programmes of the opposition but the people have now become impatient and we will organise the rally in deference to wishes of the people” said a source from the CITU.

Meanwhile, the CPI (M) sub-divisional committee of Sabroom, GMP and TYF organised a massive rally in Satchand area of Sabroom subdivision under the leadership of the state secretary and former minister and MP Jiten Chowdhury who had been elected to assembly in 2023 from the Sabroom constituency. The rally was organised with a seven point charter of demands that included, urgent repairing of the Poangbari road, stoppage of partisanship in geo-tagging of the houses built under the ‘PM Awas Yojana’ scheme, payment of wages of MGNREGA workers within a week of the completion of the work, extension of water supply connection to houses under ‘Atal Jaladhara Mission’ scheme, early election to village committees and drastic action against drug peddlers and smugglers etc.

However , the police acting at the instance of ruling party had tried to block the route of the procession which was heading for Satchand BDO office to give deputation on the ground that BJP had been organizing a religious programme in the block headquarter. When the CPI leaders of GMP and TYF confronted police with the question as to how permission for two programmes had been given in the same place and on the same day there was no reply. The CPI (M) state secretary had charged the police and civil administration with dereliction of duty and illegal activity but the police had no answer and onlyk requested the CPI (M) leaders not move ahead to the block headquarter. Finally Jiten Chowdhury organised the meeting in the place where the procession had been stopped and people responded to this enthusiastically despite strong resentment against the police and local leaders and miscreants of the BJP. But the entire programme was eminently successful and evoked a strong and spontaneous respose from the people.
