A shocking incident of alleged political vengeance has surfaced in Tripura’s South District, revealing how hatred and rivalry are now taking new and destructive forms across the state. After incidents of vegetables being destroyed and rubber plantations set ablaze, the latest outrage has come from Shantirbazar subdivision, where an entire fishery venture worth Rs. 27 lakh was poisoned overnight, ending the dreams of two hardworking brothers. The tragedy unfolded in Kalsi’s Anandapara area under Shantirbazar, where brothers Param Das and Subrata Som had leased a five-kanis pond to establish a modern commercial fish farm. Determined to become self-reliant, they had pledged to create livelihoods on their own soil instead of chasing government jobs. Their plan was simple yet ambitious to build a future through entrepreneurship.

The two brothers had invested Rs. 27 lakh, including a bank loan of Rs. 18 lakh, for electrification, motor pumps, CCTV installation, and other infrastructure. They had even built a small cottage beside the pond to monitor the site round-the-clock. Success seemed within reach, until Monday night turned into a nightmare.

According to their account, the fish suddenly began thrashing about and behaving abnormally. Rushing to the pond, they tried to save them by running oxygen pumps and increasing water flow, but it was too late. By dawn, the once-bustling pond had turned into a silent valley of death. Thousands of fish, rui, mrigel, chanda, tilapia , floated lifeless, while the water turned black with toxins. In tears, Param Das recounted that they had released one lakh baby chanda fish just three months ago, costing Rs. 6 lakh. “They all died before my eyes. This can’t happen without someone poisoning the water,” he cried.

Authorities have collected water and fish samples for testing. Both the Fisheries Department and local police have launched an investigation, and a formal case has been registered. However, the larger question remains: while the government promotes self-employment and entrepreneurship, how can such ventures survive if they are systematically destroyed by jealousy and political vendetta?
