A tense situation unfolded in Tripura’s Sabroom subdivision on Tuesday when police stopped a rally organized by the CPI(M). The incident led to a heated confrontation between senior CPI(M) leader and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and the police officials on duty, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nityanand Sarkar.

According to reports, the police prevented the rally from proceeding beyond a certain point, citing the absence of prior permission for the street procession. The confrontation began when officers stopped the rally near Satmura area and instructed participants to disperse. However, CPI(M) leaders and supporters strongly opposed the move and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the police blockade.

Eyewitnesses and video footage showed Jitendra Chaudhury engaging in a sharp verbal exchange with the SDPO after the police allegedly attempted to stop the peaceful march without valid grounds. Chaudhury, visibly angered, accused the police of acting under political pressure and violating the democratic rights of the opposition.

Party leaders, including State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, MLA Sudhan Das, and senior CPI(M) figures Badal Chowdhury and Tapan Chakraborty, condemned the police action, describing it as an attack on democracy. They alleged that the ruling administration was misusing the police force to suppress the opposition’s legitimate political activities.

In response, the police maintained that the rally was stopped as it lacked proper permission and was causing traffic congestion. However, sources later confirmed that following the altercation, the SDPO personally approached Jitendra Chaudhury and apologised for the misunderstanding and inconvenience caused to the rally participants.

The situation eventually calmed after the apology, and the rally resumed peacefully. The dramatic exchange between Jitendra Chaudhury and the police has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and sparking debate across the state’s political circles.

The CPI(M) leadership has announced plans to raise the issue at higher levels, asserting that such incidents reflect the growing intolerance against opposition activities in Tripura.
