A recent ruling by the Tripura High Court has once again sparked debate over the competence and accountability of government advocates representing the state in legal matters. The controversy centers around a case involving the license cancellation of a bar located beside Rabindra Bhavan in Agartala.
The District Magistrate of West Tripura Dr Vishal Kumar, IAS had earlier revoked the bar’s license, citing violations of legal and administrative rules. However, in a significant development, Justice T. Amarnath Gaur of the Tripura High Court set aside the DM’s order just two days ago and granted permission for the restaurant-cum-bar to resume operations.
Speaking on the issue, advocate Arijit Bhowmik stated that the High Court’s ruling on Monday clearly exposed the weak legal position of the state government in the case. This has led to growing public concern over why government advocates are repeatedly losing cases in court, often in situations where the administration’s decisions seem legally justifiable.
Observers allege that many government lawyers fail to prepare cases properly and lack effective courtroom presentation, resulting in frequent judicial setbacks for the state. The same pattern, they note, can be seen not only in higher courts but also in lower judiciary proceedings across Tripura.
The bar license case is being viewed as another example of poor legal handling by the state’s advocates. Meanwhile, social media platforms are abuzz with debates questioning whether Tripura government lawyers are truly protecting public interests or merely performing their duties superficially.
Legal experts and citizens alike argue that this verdict underscores a key point, administrative decisions cannot stand on orders alone, they require strong legal reasoning and effective representation in court.
As discussions continue, one question dominates public discourse,
Should the Tripura government reassess the functioning and accountability of its legal team in light of such repeated courtroom failures?
