The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee’s Law, Human Rights and RTI Department on Monday submitted a detailed memorandum to the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), alleging widespread human rights violations and police inaction during the past seven and a half years of BJP rule in the state.
A delegation led by senior advocates Prashanta Sen Chowdhury, Shastitya Bhattacharjee, Mrinal Kanti Biswas, Pritha Deb, Nigamananda Goswami, Pujan Biswas and Sujoy Sarkar, accompanied by around 25 lawyers, met the Chairperson of the Commission in Agartala and handed over a memorandum citing several cases of custodial deaths, mob lynchings, atrocities on women, and alleged police bias.
The memorandum alleged that in many police stations, FIRs in serious crimes, particularly those involving women, were either not registered or were suppressed under political pressure. It also referred to a series of cases — including a woman being burnt alive, the death of a Udaipur teacher allegedly due to police torture, the death of a Sakram schoolgirl after prolonged abuse, and the Kumarghat Rath Yatra tragedy — where no accountability or compensation was ensured.
The Congress also accused the police of shielding perpetrators in cases of communal violence, attacks on journalists, and vandalism of media offices, while acting swiftly against those who spoke in favour of peace or exposed corruption. The party claimed that despite repeated incidents of rights violations, the THRC had failed to play an effective role in ensuring justice.
Responding to the delegation, the Commission’s Chairperson assured that all the allegations would be examined and appropriate action taken. The Congress leaders, however, warned that if no concrete steps were taken, the party and allied organisations would be compelled to take to the streets and pursue legal measures.
