Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday strongly criticised the Tripura Police’s decision to deny permission for a public rally proposed by the Youth Tipra Federation, the youth wing of the ruling ally Tipra Motha, scheduled for November 7.

Addressing a press conference at the CPI(M) state headquarters, Chaudhury, who is also a CPI(M) politburo member, said the move was undemocratic and contrary to the principles of political freedom. “In a democracy, the government must ensure that all political parties can exercise their rights freely. If the government disagrees with a political programme, it should counter it politically, not by denying permission,” he said.

Chaudhury questioned the rationale behind invoking law and order concerns, pointing out that Tipra Motha is part of the BJP-led ruling coalition. “If a constituent of the government itself is not allowed to hold a rally, it reflects poorly on the administration. And if a ruling partner violates the law, the government must take responsibility for it,” he remarked.

The CPI(M) leader also referred to earlier objections raised by Congress leaders who had urged the government to disallow the rally on security grounds.

Reacting to recent remarks by BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb that the tripartite accord with Tipra Motha was under examination by a parliamentary select committee, Chaudhury said the statement exposed the BJP’s lack of intent to implement the agreement. “An accord signed between three parties does not need parliamentary scrutiny or constitutional amendment. This shows the Centre’s reluctance to honour its commitment to the Tipra Motha,” he added.
