After nearly 15 days of intense investigation into the massive narcotics seizure from a railway wagon at Jirania station, the Tripura Police have finally arrested one of the key figures linked to the interstate drug trafficking network.

The arrested individual has been identified as Rajib Dasgupta (42) is manager of the Prime accused Arun Ghosh transport agencie. He was apprehended on Thursday night by the Anti-Narcotics Unit of the State Crime Branch, officials confirmed.

According to police sources, Dasgupta is one of the main operators of a large-scale drug trafficking syndicate active across several northeastern states. Another prime suspect involved in the same racket is still absconding, and police teams are conducting operations to trace and arrest him.

A senior police officer stated that the investigation is progressing under the close supervision of top officials to dismantle the entire illegal transportation and supply network connected to the case.

The case dates back to October 17, when, acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team comprising Tripura Police, Assam Rifles, Government Railway Police (GRP) abd Special Task Force launched a coordinated operation at Jirania Railway Station in West Tripura district.

During the search of a goods train stationed at the yard, authorities recovered 1,07,800 bottles of banned Eskuf cough syrup, a substance containing Codeine Phosphate and Triprolidine Hydrochlorid, both controlled under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The seizure, valued at approximately Rs 2.4 crore, triggered widespread attention and concern across Tripura. The banned syrup, frequently misused as a narcotic in India, Bangladesh, and other countries, was reportedly being smuggled from Delhi to Jirania through the rail route.

Police officials described the seizure as one of the biggest anti-narcotics successes in recent years, marking a crucial step in curbing organized drug trafficking through the state’s transport network.

The investigation continues, with law enforcement determined to trace the kingpins behind the operation and ensure exemplary punishment to set a deterrent precedent against narcotics smuggling in Tripura and the northeastern region.
