Tripura Police have arrested three persons for allegedly killing a woman on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Abhicharan village under Sidhai police station limits in West Tripura. The arrests were made on Thursday night after an extensive search operation, officials said.

The victim, identified as Nanda Rani Debbarma, was allegedly assaulted and hanged to death on October 26 after the accused claimed she had cast an evil spell causing illness in their families. The incident went unreported for days as her family was threatened with social boycott.

The case surfaced when the victim’s sister, Takshati Debbarma, lodged a complaint on October 28. Police later exhumed the body for post-mortem and registered an FIR against five people. Three suspects were caught from a nearby forest, while the search for two others continues. Security has been intensified in the village to prevent further unrest.
