Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday said the state has achieved the distinction of being the largest producer of eggs in the North-East and is now working towards full self-sufficiency in both milk and egg production.

Addressing the 17th foundation day of Tripura Veterinary College at RK Nagar, Dr. Saha lauded the state’s progress in animal husbandry and called it a major contributor to the rural economy. “Tripura is in a very good position in terms of animal protein availability and ranks first in the North-East in per capita egg production,” he said.

The Chief Minister, however, cautioned against complacency, emphasising that the ultimate goal is complete self-reliance in all animal-based products. He said Tripura has already achieved self-sufficiency in meat production and currently holds the second position in milk output among northeastern states.

Dr. Saha outlined a series of government measures aimed at boosting livestock and dairy development. These include the introduction of mobile veterinary vans to deliver doorstep animal healthcare and the disbursement of financial aid to more than 8,000 livestock rearer families under various state schemes.

Underscoring the close link between livestock development and the rural economy, the Chief Minister said that nearly nine lakh people in Tripura are involved in cooperative movements, which play a key role in sustaining livelihoods and ensuring nutritional security.

Encouraging students and faculty to embrace technological innovation, Dr. Saha urged the use of tools like 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and 3D classroom demonstrations to enhance veterinary education.

He added that the college, which admits 66 students—85 percent of whom are from Tripura—has received recognition from the Veterinary Council of India and secured North Eastern Council funding for new hostel infrastructure.
