The scenic Jampui Hills in North Tripura, known for its pleasant climate and orange orchards, is set to receive a boost in tourism infrastructure with a modern eco-friendly homestay project planned by the Tourism Department. The initiative aims to create livelihood opportunities for local communities through sustainable tourism and will be implemented by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission in collaboration with the district administration.

North Tripura District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, accompanied by officials of the District Social Welfare Department, the Jampui Block administration, community leaders including Dr Ziam Thiamma Pachuau, and representatives of the Young Mizo Association, visited the proposed project site on Tuesday. The complex is planned near the traditional viewpoint between Vangmun and Bethelianchip, a popular location offering panoramic views.

Chandran said the project, estimated at around Rs 2.5 crore, has been designed to blend modern amenities with the natural beauty of the hills. She said Jampui Hills holds significant potential for responsible eco-tourism and highlighted that the initiative will directly benefit local families. She added that the goal is to develop a sustainable tourist destination that respects both nature and local culture.

Officials said the proposed homestay complex will include five modern cottages, a conference hall, a community centre for local art, food and cultural displays, a children’s activity zone, a parking area and a solar power system. The project will be operated through local self-help groups responsible for hospitality, maintenance and cleanliness, ensuring community ownership and long-term sustainability.

A preliminary feasibility survey has already been completed and preparations are under way for the Detailed Project Report. The Tourism Department will design eco-friendly structures using local materials, while the district administration will focus on land development, beautification and mobilisation of local communities.

Plans are also being made for nature trails, cultural performance spaces and local markets promoting traditional products and organic fruits. The district magistrate has instructed engineers to keep construction environmentally sensitive by using the natural slope of the land instead of cutting into the hills.

Funding for the project will come entirely from the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission. In the first phase, land preparation, road connectivity and installation of drinking water facilities will be completed, followed by construction in the next phase.

Local youth and community organisations have extended support to the initiative, saying it will create employment and boost small enterprises such as cafés, tour guide services and handicraft stalls. The administration aims to develop the Jampui Hills model as a flagship eco-tourism project that can be replicated in other hill regions of Tripura.
